How do your dining habits compare to others your age?
According to a recent Gallup Survey, boomers are more content to prepare food at home, while millennials favor dining out. "Since this year Millennials are set to overtake baby boomers as the nation's largest living generational cohort", the National Restaurant Association is paying special attention to this group.
Americans now spend more money eating out than they do buying groceries. According to Bloomberg, this is a first because never before have sales at restaurants and bars surpassed those at grocery stores. A Morgan Stanley report detailed how Instagram-happy Millennials are younger and more willing to spend money on food away from home." They see dining out as a social event where they can connect. Their diversity and interest in new things draw them to more ethnic restaurants too.
A Forbes article supported that conclusion by detailing how Americans spend nearly 1000 dollars a year just eating lunch, and Millennials aged 18 to 34 average 2.3 lunch visits a week. While this is great news if you're a restaurant or bar owner; it can be disheartening if you are a nonprofit hoping to get charitable contributions instead. Because, while Millennials do give, a recent Blackbaud study found that 60% of Millennials only "donated an average of $481 dollars per year across 3.3 charities."
