Most of the Continental United States will be having well-above-average summer temperatures according to the latest outlook from NOAA's climate prediction center.
With hotter temperatures, people who work outside or participate in summer activities need to be careful and look out for signs of heat stress. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there were on average 618 deaths per year related to exposure to excessive natural heat.
The most serious of all the heat-related illnesses is heat stroke and this happens when a person's body is unable to control their body temperature. Symptoms include low blood pressure, cool and clammy skin, profuse sweating, hallucinations, chills, throbbing headache, high body temperature, confusion, dizziness and slurred speech.
Other heat-related illnesses are heat cramps caused by inadequate fluid intake and working in a hot environment. This can be avoided by working in a well air-conditioned or cool space and staying hydrated.
Sun burn from direct exposure to the sun can cause irreversible harm to your skin. That's why it is important to stay in the shade when possible and wear plenty of sunscreen.
Another type of heat illness is heat exhaustion and it's most common in athletes. Extreme sweating causes the body to not cool itself down and perspiration decreases while the skin and core body temperatures rise. Symptoms of this are excessive thirst, weakness and headaches. Drinking fluids with electrolytes is especially important to avoid heat exhaustion.
